Looking Closely: Victoria Gitman’s Paintings and Drawings
February 2 to April 27, 2008
In February 2008, the Las Vegas Art Museum will host an intimate
exhibition of Victoria Gitman’s paintings in the West Gallery. Born in
Buenos Aires, Argentina, Gitman paints realistic works of luxurious
items, including vintage beaded purses and pieces of estate jewelry.
The artist strives to reproduce her subject matter with a taxonomic
exactitude that represents the idiosyncrasies of each individual purse
or piece of jewelry. Painted at a reduced scale, Gitman’s works invite
the viewer to look closely at the intricate details of each object and
the pristine surface of the painted panel.
She received her B.F.A. in painting at Florida International University in Miami, and continues to live and work in South Florida. Her work has been exhibited at the Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach; the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego; Praxis International Art in Mexico City; and the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington D.C., among many other venues. She is represented by Daniel Weinberg Gallery in Los Angeles and David Nolan Gallery in New York.
