All paintings and fabric designs are by Raoul Dufy (French, 1877-1953)
Feb. 7- July 5, 2009
Part fauvist, part Impressionist, the paintings of Raoul Dufy.(1877-1953) are distinctive for their rich, but often flat, stylings, and their attention to light and skillful play with color. This exhibit showcases a lesser-known aspect of the French artistt's oeuvre: his joyous collaborations with couturier Paul Poiret and with Bianchini-Ferier, France's leading silk manufacturer. On display are nearly 100 original silk fabrics and designs, as well as a handful of dresses crafted from Dufy fabrics. One highlight: a contemporary Spanish-inflected dress by Christian LaCroix, called "La Corrida," that sports black fringe and a riotous mix of patterns in purple, green, pink, red, and gold. .Also on hand are the beautiful brocaded fabrics that Dufy designed during the 1920s, inspired by the woodcuts he created for Guillaume Apollinaire's book "Le Bestiaire, ou Cortege d'Orphee." Several of these original woodcuts round out the exhibit, presented with about 100 Dufy paintings, watercolors and drawings, the great majority of which have never been shown before in the U.S.
