Sculpture (carved statue) is an art of forming three-dimensional images in space. On the other hand, objet d'art is presented as objects that fundamentally hide mundane and rational consciousness. We will introduce two main streams of solid artworks.

Buddha in the Palm of Your Hand: Cray Votive Tablets of Mainland Southeast Asia

Senbutsu are small-size clay votive tablets imprinted with gods and Buddhist images in relief carving style. In Southeast Asia, as offering to temples was done mainly by ordinary devotees, the clay votive tablets were actively made in Dvaravati, Khmer and Pagan under the Imperial Dynasty, which once prospered in the Indochina Peninsula. This exhibition will comprehensively introduce approximately 108 works of Senbutsu from ancient time, which has been rarely ever organized in Japan until now. Please enjoy to your heart's content, this rich formative expressions of sincere prayer by unknown devotees which were held in the palm of their hands, in the form of Senbutusu.

Temaeza is the place where a host or hostess of tea ceremony performs tea making in front of guests. Hence, it is truly the front stage the tearoom. By focusing on tea utensils, which constitutes with this space, we will exhibit approximately 20 works of tea bowls, tea caddies, tea scoops, water jars and teakettles at this exhibition.

The Eyes of Ataka Eiichi, Seeker of True Art: Selected Chinese and Korean Ceramics from the Ataka Collection

The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka is known to have a world-wide collection of oriental ceramics such as from China and Korea. From the core of its Ataka Collection, we will introduce the rare and unique aesthetic world of the collector, Ataka Eiichi, by carefully selecting approximately 200 masterpieces of Chinese and Korean ceramics that include two national treasures and fifteen important cultural properties.
