Objects often refuse to be endearing. Revolting against the crime scene of sentimentality they outlive us with their refusals, visible only in moments of slippage (between word-object-image) that ultimately reveal the failure of narratives that try to contain them or foist upon them a disposition. 

Steampunk artists know this and embrace an object's tenacity, their creations honoring the materiality of life, love and the visceral complexities that categorically refuse the stale rhythm of self-absorption that fetishizes the "new." But temporality is a bitch and this is exactly what Art Donovan's landmark exhibition at the esteemed Museum of the History of Science at Oxford illuminates. No less than 12 world-renowned artists of the Steampunk genre from the U.S., UK, Japan, the Netherlands and Australia will offer a view of their contraptions and most brilliant corruptions. Illuminating the foreign and familiar of the Victorian cultural unconscious, Donovan's exhibition is a coup for the curious. -- Joanne Molina
