Painted Rooms: American Historic Interiors by Michael John Hunt

The American Museum in Britain is delighted to present an exhibition of forty of English artist Michael John Hunt’s exquisite interiors of Winterthur and Wynkoop, treasured historic houses in the USA. The works will be shown in the Museum’s period rooms and Gallery, before the exhibition travels to Winterthur later this year.

Celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic for his meticulously detailed architectural paintings, Hunt (b. 1941) is entirely self-taught and has an intuitive understanding of perspective that would rival the abilities of many an artist. He has exhibited around the world from Amsterdam to Dubai and counts among his collectors members of the British Royal Family as well as Washington society.

One of the most striking features of Hunt’s portraits of American historic interiors is his theatrical use of natural light: sunlight filters between wood wall panelling, spills through window panes, and pools onto floorboards by open doorways. Fleeting shadows are thus captured forever in paint. Surprisingly, Hunt creates his pictures with layered acrylics and glazes producing subtleties of light and colour that are more usually associated with oil pigments. Thus Hunt illustrates his innate artistic dexterity – the painterly equivalent of a musician’s ‘perfect pitch’.

What Will She Waer? The Enduring Romance of the Wedding Dress,

February 14, 2011-8 January 8, 2012

This special display to celebrate the Royal wedding in 2011 will showcase some of the finest wedding dresses from the Fashion Museum collection. The display will also include a previously unseen archive of photographs of couture wedding dresses from the 1930s.

Marilyn – Hollywood Icon

For the past 50 years the American Museum in Britain has informed its visitors about the cultural history of the United States in order to strengthen relations between the two countries.  Over 3 million people have visited the Museum since it opened in 1961, averaging around 40,000 visitors a year, including thousands of schoolchildren.  In 2011, the Museum will mark this historical milestone with a major loan exhibition, a gallery trail, three publications, and the opening of two new facilities.  The anniversary year will also feature parties, a film series, and lectures in Bath, London, New York and Washington and much much more.

On view in the main exhibition gallery will be an intriguing show entitled "Marilyn – Hollywood Icon," featuring twenty of the screen goddess’s gowns and outfits, original photographs and posters, and personal items, all kindly loaned by David Gainsborough Roberts, who has one of the largest collections of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia.  Fab@50 presents fifty unusual items in the collection and the fabulous stories that lie behind them, displayed in the Museum’s period rooms within Claverton Manor.
