We are pleased to present an exhibition of sculpture by American artist Christopher Kurtz. Six new works made of carved and bent wood that float, twirl and perch themselves with extraordinary lightness. Each is finely crafted and considered illusions, such as Dowser, a large sculpture of a tree branch made of bent laminated ash and pine, could easily be mistaken for detritus that has been stripped bare by the hot sun, yet on closer observation the artist's hand is revealed.
Christopher Kurtz (born 1975 in Excelsior Springs, MO) began his studies at the Kansas City Art Institute from 1994-1996 and later on to the NYSCC School of Art and Design at Alfred University where he earned a BFA in 1998. The following year he went to work as studio assistant to sculptor Martin Puryear (1999-2004) and in 2005 he was a recipient of the prestigious Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. Christopher Kurtz currently resides in Accord, New York with his wife Deborah Ehrlich and daughter Willa.

His work is very streamline sleek and minimalistic, but with enough depth not to leave the observer cold.
